Our story

Why “Ugly” Leather?

Because for most of my life, that’s exactly what leather was to me.

The founder at the workbench

The smell we all grew up with

If you grew up in Bangladesh, you know it. The torn seat on a city bus. The sofa in a relative’s drawing room. The “genuine leather” bag at the market that peeled in a month. That sour, chemical smell — that was leather.

So I never liked it. I didn’t know there was anything else.

I wasn’t looking for leather. I was looking for something to make with my own hands.

Screens by day, leather by night

By day I work in tech, building digital products. My days are meetings, screens and problems to solve — for things you can never actually touch. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with the idea of making a real, physical product of my own — something you can hold in your hand.

I tried leathercraft almost by accident. And the first time I cut into a piece of full-grain, vegetable-tanned hide, I understood: this wasn’t the leather I grew up with. It smelled warm and earthy. It was firm, then it softened. It changed colour in the sun. It was alive in a way plastic never is.

From a hobby to a bench

One project became ten. I bought the tools properly — knives, pricking irons, needles, burnishers. Then one evening I asked myself: why not make these for other people too?

That’s Ugly Leather. There’s no factory. Every wallet is cut, stitched and finished by hand in my home workshop in Bangladesh, using only full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather sourced right here.

Ugly name. Beautiful leather.

The name is a reminder of what most of us were sold. What we make is the opposite: honest leather that gets more beautiful the longer you carry it. That’s why our first wallet is called Lost Beauty.
